These are big hump backed buses pulled by large truck-tractors. The entire rig resembles a camel's back hence the name, camello. They are always jammed full of passengers. Fortunately most of the people are used to lines and crowded conditions, so everyone gets along. According to a friend of mine, if you ride it far enough, you will steal your own stuff back. It only costs a couple of pesos to ride. In the country side, one doesn't encounter buses, you are more apt to see carts pulled by horses, trucks, or wagons towed by old farm tractors. Transportation is one of the larger problems in the country it seems. There is not enough fuel, and there are not enough functional vehicles.

What happens to all that petroleum that Castro is receiving from Venezuela? The shipment has gone up. Don't you think there would be enough oil to run these buses? The gov't. recently bought hundreds of new buses from China.
I think the strengthening ties with both Venezuela and china will definitely improve things in Cuba and for most Cubans. There is a plan to resurrect an old defunct oil refinery, this will require a year or more to get it operational. More locomotives and buses (1000 last year and another 1000 this year) will improve things. All this has to get into operation and there must be some infrastructure to support it. Cuba is in hock up to its ears to both of these countries for this help. How long they are willing to find supporting Castro and his government by carrying their debt a worthwhile venture is anyone's guess. Plus it's Cuba, rolling 1000 buses off the boat is not going to rapidly improve local transportation , because that is just not the way things happen there.
